Free business ideas from billionaire Mark Cuban

He got lucky once. I guess though, that if you have that much cash you can be as dumb as a rock and still make money. He’s successful with the Dallas Mavericks and other ventures, now he’s giving away his ideas. However, none of these struck me as great ideas but coming from a billionaire they might be worth looking into.

Wal-Mart trying out the Social Network Space

walmart_hub.gifLooks look Wal-mart recently snuck in their version of Myspace, something they call The Hub. Actually it looks like another merchandising/marketing tool for selling clothes, for back to school. They offer you a page to customize, and a way to upload videos. The Hub looks like a poor attempt to get some of the Myspace crowd. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Yahoo sets record straight about being #1

The below was sent to me from a Yahoo PR person:

“We’d like to point out the misleading nature of this report as it compares the MySpace.com domain to only the mail.yahoo.com domain. The following is a statement on behalf of Yahoo!: “

Yahoo! Statement:

The report that Hitwise released today with the headline “MySpace Moves Into #1 Position for all Internet Sites” is misleading. The Yahoo! network is made up of many domains and it is not accurate to compare MySpace.com to just Yahoo!’s mail.yahoo.com domain. When taking into account all of Yahoo!’s domains together as an entire network, Yahoo! clearly remains the number one property in terms of audience share, duration share, page view share and days visited per month.

In the U.S. alone, Yahoo! attracts 129 million unique visitors per month, which represents 74 percent of the online population; in comparison, MySpace reaches only 30 percent of the online population with an audience of 52 million unique visitors. In addition, Yahoo! has the largest share of online time spent than any other property: Yahoo! accounts for 13 percent of users’ online time, while MySpace has only 3.2 percent share in users’ online time.

Yahoo! maintains its leadership position as the world’s most trafficked Internet destination online, with a community of more than 500 million unique monthly visitors from around the globe.

Skype Announces Free International Calls

skypeinternationalforfree.png

Back in May, Skype announced that they were letting USA users make FREE phone calls to any landline phone within the US or Canada. It’s a pretty cool deal, I’ve used it a lot. Now, they’ve decided that on certain weekends, USA and Canadian Skype users can call the UK, Mexico or Japan for Free. You can read more about the deal here.

Myspace passes Yahoo and Google

myspace#1.PNG

According to Hitwise, Myspace is oficially the most visited domain on the internet. That’s pretty big news, considering Yahoo has been in that position for a very long time. How long can the Myspace madness last? It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Myspace, when the kids decide that it’s not cool anymore. Additionally, if Myspace is that popular, they should be raking in the cash.

Adidas Soccer and Myspace join forces

myspaceplusaddidas.gif

I wrote a couple of posts (here and here) a while back about Nike and Google joining up to start a social network for Soccer lovers called Joga. Now, it looks like Adidas and Myspace are upto the same thing. Well, except, the adidas soccer page is built within Myspace. They currently have 37,223 on board, as “friends”. That seems kinda low to me. Anyway, if you’re a soccer fan, then you might want to check it out.

Social networks grow big but are still seeking ways to monetize trafficpopurls.com

The relatively new phenomenon of online social networking is exhibiting the behavior that new, Internet-generated activities have exhibited from Day One of the commercialized web: super-fast acceptance and wild growth. Retailers have been particularly interested in social networking as a way to market goods and attract new customers.

Industry leader MySpace.com grew 230% year over year from 15.6 million unique visitors in May 2005 to 51.4 million in May this year, comScore Networks Inc. reports. Facebook.com, a site popular with college students, grew 102% from 6.9 million a year ago to 14 million in May. MSN Spaces sites grew 205% from 3.1 million to 9.5 million.

ComScore is working on compiling numbers for social networking as a category, but has not done so yet. It believes that the growth of the popular sites can be viewed as a stand-in for the category.

“The popularity of social networking is not expected to wane in the near future,” said Peter Daboll, president and CEO of comScore Media Metrix. “This is a phenomenon we`re seeing not only in the U.S., but also around the world. The challenge for social networking sites will now be monetization and how advertisers will respond to the global marketing potential of these sites.”

ComScore reports these leading sites in May, their unique visitors (in millions) last May and this May, and change from a year ago:

MySpace.com, 15.578, 51.441, 230%

Google is possibly smarter than I thought they were.

With all of the buzz around the blog world about Google’s new Spreadsheets. I was am starting to lose a little respect for them because of the their rapid release of web products that don’t really help anyone (base, notebook, page creator). However, they could be a bit smarter than I thought they were. I read an interesting post over at signal vs noise. What if Google is releasing these products as a distraction from their primary goal?

What if Google was so brilliantly twisted that they’re using Writely and Spreadsheet and Calendar and massive numbers of new hires as flares to distract Microsoft (and others)? Shoot up a flare (Spreadsheet) and scare Microsoft into paying even more attention to new attacks from new directions. The flares serve one purpose: to redirect competitors’ energy away from focusing on search/ads, which are Google’s core competency (and primary revenue source). Hey look over here!!! Is Google the best slight of hand magician around? Is the “Google Office” just a head fake?
