To catch a thief, Justin.tv style

On Monday I had a break in at my house. The punk ass thief took some pocket change, my 15 year old Mountain bike and my Xbox 360, my laptop and a few other items. I’m going to miss my bike and the Xbox. Damn it, I had so much time invested in trying to finish SKATE. I guess I’ll have to start all over. Oh well.

So, on Monday, I went to a friends house, to dog/house sit for a few days but before I left, I set up my web cam and started broadcasting on Justin.tv. I had never done this before but for some strange reason I set it up. Never-the-less, I checked in on Justin.tv a few times but never really got a good view and for some reason it said it wasn’t broadcasting. So, I went to check in on my house today (2 days later) to discover my back bedroom window busted out and my stuff scattered about in the hall.  I called the cops, they came out and finger printed and assured me that a case like mine usually takes months. They left, and then I remembered that I had been broadcasting on Justin.tv. Sure enough, after about an hour of sorting through the archives, I hit the jackpot. The mother fucker broke my glass at about 10:35 pm and then the video captured the following:

  1. he waited about a minute and then broke out the rest of the glass (4:42 on the video)
  2. walked down the hall and came into my office, taking a few dollars (4:05 on the video)
  3. left my office and explored the house, probably taking my Xbox, controller and games as well as my laptop. Bastard!
  4. comes back down the hall and starts flipping on bedroom lights, grabs my bike. (1:44 on video)
  5. then he goes back into my office where he finds the change bowl and other small items. This is where you get a good look at his face (1:22 on the video)
  6. leaves the office and goes back to turning on lights and checking everything out, takes my bike and then goes out the front door.

Threadless for skateboard decks- popdeck.com

Popdeck is an ongoing skateboard deck design contest. Just like Threadless.com (and others) anyone can submit a design, then the website members vote for their favorite designs. The design with the most votes wins $200 (currently) and gets a free deck. I love the concept of popdeck and that business model in general.

Jango-Social Internet Radio

I just got my invite to the latest entrant in the Music Discovery/Community web world, called Jango.com. At first glance it seems to be a cross between Pandora and Last.fm but with a lot more Ajax and a really nice user interface. The jury is still out on the music selection though. They don’t have a lot of the artists that I like, instead they tend to have more main stream popular stuff. Hopefully that will improve over time. They are in invite only Beta now, so you’ll have to work a little to get your invite. You can go to the jango.com homepage to signup for an invite or give inviteshare a try.

Skatespotter.com - Google mashup for skate spots

I assumed someone would do this sooner or later. It’s such a natural fit: Google Maps + community powered skate spot identification = Skatespotter.com. Currently the site doesn’t have very many spots for the west coast but as soon as others discover the site, I’m sure that’ll change. Check it out for yourself at Skatespotter.com.

AreYouWatchingThis.com- The ultimate sports community

A few weeks ago I went to a DemoCamp here in Austin. One of the presenters there was Mark Phillip who was talking about his sports community called AreYouWatchingThis (RUWT?). There are a lots of Diggs, Myspaces and youtubes out there but there is only one RUWT. I call RUWT a sports community but it’s more than that. It’s a sports lovers dream. What the hell is RUWT you ask, well it’s a community of sports lovers and one robot who all rate games based on how exciting they are. Then based on what level of alerts you want and how you want to be alerted (email or Text Message) you’ll be sent a message alerting you to an exiting game. Marks has developed something he calls the RUWTbot which basically watches all the games for you and then will alert you when the game gets good.

Doing Laundry. Raking the leaves. Went to sleep early. Are any of these
worthwhile reasons for missing the next instant classic? No, we didn’t
think so either. Sign up for our free alerts and RUWTbot will hit you up by email or text message with the score, time left, and channel you need to turn to to catch the game.

Additionally, there is human interaction via a Digg like voting system. The community activity seems to be pretty small now but I think that’s going change soon as more people take notice. Mark just got a write up in ESPN magazine, so it want be long before the sports fans start signing up. RUWT has plans to get in with the TIVO’s of the world so that your game can automatically start recording when the game gets good. Until that happens RUWT offers an API that will allow enterprising programmers the opportunity to do it themselves.

I can’t wait for basketball season to start up again so that I can use RUWT to it’s full potential.

Joost content is getting better

Since giving up my cable TV, I’ve been playing around with all the internet related “tv” apps/services that I can. Joost, which most of you have heard of has been on of the most talked about companies online in that space. Initially, I wasn’t really impressed, mostly for their lack of content. Lately however, they have been cranking out the content and now Joost has captured more of time than in the past. However I still think that products like the Veoh.tv app will be the future of online “tv”. If you’ve ever wanted to produce video content, now would be the time to start. By the way, I still have a few joost invites left if you need one.

Veoh tv- Is the new way to watch Video from the internet

Veoh.com which is a popular destination for watching video clips, downloading and uploading them as well. It’s a youtubesque site but with longer format content that you can download. Check out a profile I did on them last year (”Veoh: the next internet star“). So, last week they announced a new product called VeohTV, which is a downloaded media player that allows you to watch video content from just about any source on the web. It’s basically the beginning piece to what I see happening with TV in the near future. Anyone can be a content producer, thanks to the internet. Now with VeohTV, that content can get equal billing and be available to anyone at any time. I haven’t really dugg around to deep into Veohtv just yet, but have played with it enough to know that I like it. You might recall that I did a post on on the (”Top source online for free movies and television“) . Now with veohtv I could have rewritten that post and named it “the 1 source online for free movies and TV”. It really is that good. I suspect that as Veohtv becomes more popular, more companies will make sure that their content will be found on Veoh. Go here to sign for a VeohTV invite. I hope to do a more in depth look at Veohtv in the near future.
