To catch a thief, Justin.tv style

On Monday I had a break in at my house. The punk ass thief took some pocket change, my 15 year old Mountain bike and my Xbox 360, my laptop and a few other items. I’m going to miss my bike and the Xbox. Damn it, I had so much time invested in trying to finish SKATE. I guess I’ll have to start all over. Oh well.

So, on Monday, I went to a friends house, to dog/house sit for a few days but before I left, I set up my web cam and started broadcasting on Justin.tv. I had never done this before but for some strange reason I set it up. Never-the-less, I checked in on Justin.tv a few times but never really got a good view and for some reason it said it wasn’t broadcasting. So, I went to check in on my house today (2 days later) to discover my back bedroom window busted out and my stuff scattered about in the hall.  I called the cops, they came out and finger printed and assured me that a case like mine usually takes months. They left, and then I remembered that I had been broadcasting on Justin.tv. Sure enough, after about an hour of sorting through the archives, I hit the jackpot. The mother fucker broke my glass at about 10:35 pm and then the video captured the following:

  1. he waited about a minute and then broke out the rest of the glass (4:42 on the video)
  2. walked down the hall and came into my office, taking a few dollars (4:05 on the video)
  3. left my office and explored the house, probably taking my Xbox, controller and games as well as my laptop. Bastard!
  4. comes back down the hall and starts flipping on bedroom lights, grabs my bike. (1:44 on video)
  5. then he goes back into my office where he finds the change bowl and other small items. This is where you get a good look at his face (1:22 on the video)
  6. leaves the office and goes back to turning on lights and checking everything out, takes my bike and then goes out the front door.

What a prick!! Hope the police are working with you and have reviewed the video – made still photos of the SOB. Have you had a chance to compare the video pix with police mug shots?

If you can, print ‘em out and post ‘em all over town. Craigs list, Chronicle, etc., etc.

Call it “To Catch A Thief”… Someone in town will recognize the jerk. Hope he hasn’t procreated…

Chris, I live 3 houses west from you on the corner. I’ve seen this guy walking the neighborhood many times. I’ve already reported it to police who told me to report it online through CrimeStoppers. I was watering plants Monday evening before dark and he and another African American male were walking from our street north on the cross street next to my house. He had the white tank on then. These two guys walk together a lot. I think the shorter of the guys (not this guy) lives several houses east of you. I first saw the video on the neighborhood list serv. Thanks for sharing it so quickly. I started to stop by and talk to you but didn’t see a car. I hope the TV coverage helps. Sorry this happened to you.

Chris, I am really impressed with how you set up your video system! I don’t recognize the burglar, but it sounds as tho’ someone a few postings in front of this one thinks that they do recognize him. I would be happy to pay you to set up a video system just like yours, for my place!

Thanks everyone who has contacted me and or given info to the police in regards to this case. Update…Noelle Newton from KVUE called me this morning to let me know that Crimestoppers have received a few leads and the police are have gotten a ID on the guy and that they “looking into it”. Hopefully they can find the guy soon.

Too funny… Note to self: steal any webcams when breaking into someone’s house. Time for an alarm? This has baby girl worried now…

Matt- take a look at this camera http://lorexstore.lorextechnology.com/product.aspx?id=1623 it’s made for low light. You could even set it up with a motion sensor. Tell the “baby girl” not to worry.

Update: The Police made an arrest a couple of weeks ago. Nothing has been recovered yet, or probably never will.

  17. Donya, 13. August 2008, 13:30

Chris, glad there was an arrest. I called back the detective and left a long msg. but then we went to Oregon/Calif. for awhile and I never heard back from him. Wish you could get your property back. — your neighbor on the corner

the good thing about justin.tv is that it’s live streaming…so even if the burglar stole the webcam, it would be in the online archives :D
    Am i right?
