DemoCamp Austin June 2007

On Monday (June 25) I went to my first DemoCamp. It was at a great coffee shop on the south side of town called Cafe Caffeine. There were 5 presenters but the overall turn out was pretty small.

1. Jason Howell – SelfBookIt
2. David James – CommunityGoals | Raise money and find solutions for community problems and goals.
3. Paul Walhus – SearchSlides
4. Ash Maurya – BoxCloud | Dead-simple file sharing
5. Mark Phillip – AreYouWatchingThis

All presenters did a really good job of walking everyone through there product. The two products that stood out the most to me were BoxCloud and AreYouWatchingthis. Both are very polished and the guys behind them are very sharp. Boxcloud is a file sharing application that is one of the best I’ve seen. Their product is ideal for people in the creative field, as you can send large files to clients or other members of your team and have them proof the file and highlight edits without downloading the file. Go to boxcloud.com to find out more. AreYouWatchingThis.com is a sports alert community. You can think of it as a digg for live sports. It’s pretty cool because you can alerts on “exciting” games, as they’re happening. If you’re a sports fan, AreYouWatchingThis.com is a must. They hope to one day have an integration with Tivio witch will put them into some serious money.

Overall DemoCamp was a lot of fun and I look froward to the next. You can view some photos from the event here.

Veoh tv- Is the new way to watch Video from the internet

Veoh.com which is a popular destination for watching video clips, downloading and uploading them as well. It’s a youtubesque site but with longer format content that you can download. Check out a profile I did on them last year (“Veoh: the next internet star“). So, last week they announced a new product called VeohTV, which is a downloaded media player that allows you to watch video content from just about any source on the web. It’s basically the beginning piece to what I see happening with TV in the near future. Anyone can be a content producer, thanks to the internet. Now with VeohTV, that content can get equal billing and be available to anyone at any time. I haven’t really dugg around to deep into Veohtv just yet, but have played with it enough to know that I like it. You might recall that I did a post on on the (“Top source online for free movies and television“) . Now with veohtv I could have rewritten that post and named it “the 1 source online for free movies and TV”. It really is that good. I suspect that as Veohtv becomes more popular, more companies will make sure that their content will be found on Veoh. Go here to sign for a VeohTV invite. I hope to do a more in depth look at Veohtv in the near future.

Well placed comments can double your web traffic

I have to start by saying that I don’t do a lot of marketing for this site. I write this blog as a way of collecting things that I think are cool. If other people read it, then it’s a bonus. Next month allthatscool will be 2 years old. In the beginning I was more diligent about adding content more frequently, and participating in conversations on other blogs. After a few months of doing allthatscool, I was averaging close to 500 uniques a day. Additionally, when some of my posts (Why you should start an internet company) got on digg and del.icio.us, traffic spiked as high as 10k uniques in a day. Then I end up with a consulting gig that took up a lot of my time and I kind of let the blog slip. Now I’m back with more frequent updates and have more time to read other blogs and comment here and there. So, that brings me to the point of this post: with one comment on Mashable earlier this week, my traffic spiked to more than double my average. I’ve been averaging around 200 daily uniques and when I left a comment on Mashable, in the number 3 spot, my traffic shot up to where it was when I first started this site. I’ve commented on many blogs in the past and have seen curiosity clickers visiting my site as a result. But, I’ve never had a spike such as the one that I received from Mashable. I’m not sure if that’s a testament to the Power of Mashable or if it’s something else. Either way, the moral of this story is, if you have some thing relative to add to a conversation on another blog, by all means, do, but make sure you get your comment in the first 10 or less. That way you’ll get maximum exposure. Below is stats from the last 30 days. The first spike is from Stumbleupon and the other is Mashable.

Is the iPhone really worth all the hype?

With all the talk about the iPhone and everyone chomping at the bit to get one. I wonder if it’s really worth the expense to get one, especially the first generation? For a couple of years now I’ve been looking for the perfect portable device that fits all my needs:

  • I take a daily photo with my Casio EX-240 and post it over on my personal site (www.facesofme.com). So I need a device that I can take a decent hi-res photo (2-3 megapixels) with an removable memory card.
  • I listen to music all day long, whether it’s at my computer or with my iPod while I’m on the move. So, it would be nice to have a device that could at least old a few hundred songs and makes it easy to sync with my computer.
  • I need a phone. I don’t have a land line phone so I depend on my cell phone for phone communication. I usually don’t go over 600 minutes month.
  • The device needs to be small enough to fit in my front pocket, comfortably. And, be tough enough to handle regular daily abuse.
  • Currently, I don’t check the web on my phone, nor do I use it for email. However, I would like to, especially to look up info on the fly and keep up with important email.
  • Ok, so this is the biggie that keeps me looking around. If I had a phone that met all of the above needs, which there are several of them out there. I would need it to have a battery life that equals that of my current iPod or camera. I’d be satisfied with 8-10 hours.
  • The last thing is that I need to feel like I’m not getting rapped by my mobile carrier. The perfect plan would be some sort of ala carte that allows me to pick services and hours based on my needs. I currently spend a little more than $45 per month with Sprint and am happy with the price (service is another thing).

Iphone comparison chart

So, looking at the iPhone in comparison to what I’m looking for, it doesn’t look to bad. I think there are only two downsides to the iPhone that I can find:

  1. The cost, it’s damn expensive, 4GB ($499) or 8GB ($599) and the service plans are more expense than normal.
  2. It looks as if apple is trying to force you to use iTune for music and movies. I don’t use iTunes now and don’t plan on starting anytime soon. I want the flexibility to either, manually move media to the phone or sync other software (Winamp or Songbird for example). Unless I’m mistaken, the iPhone is restricting this.

Conclusion- I think when the iPhone hits the stores next week, there will be a mad scramble for the Apple Fan kids to get the phone. There will be a supply issue and I’m sure some will be sold on ebay for twice what they’re worth. But, after the smoke clears, Apple will come out with a second generation iPhone by early next year that’s better and cheaper. Additionally there will be new phones from competitors that will rival the iPhone functionality. I think I’m going to take the wait and see stance.

Firefox memory Leak beginning to be to much

I’m sure most of you are aware of the Firefox memory leak problem. It’s been so bad on my computer that I have to shut down FireFox multiple times a day. Even then, with only 6-7 windows open, Firefox can start draining the memory on your computer. This morning for example, I’ve already restarted Firefox once and with 7 tabs open and a few add-ons running ( Allpeers, Colorzilla, del.icio.us, Firebug, ScribeFire, SEO for Firefox, Session Manager, Web Developer, Talkback and Video Downloader) my Firefox memory usage is over 700k. I’ve tried several different adjustments including changing the “browser.cache.memory.capacity” to 16384. Nothing seems to work. With Apple making Safari available for windows, it might time to switch. I think the only thing that’s keeping me from switching is the fact that I’ve become dependent on the Firefox extensions. If anyone has suggestions for fixing the memory leak, I would love to hear it. Otherwise, I think Firefox better get to fixing this problem or they will see their market share dwindle.

Visualize the Internet via Akamai

Akamai has recently made available real-time data that was previously only available to their customers. It’s pretty cool info, for instance you can see their “Retail Consumption Meter” that shows data on web traffic to retail sites.

You can read more details at Read Write Web.
