Last week I did my first project at Rentacoder.com. I was at first a bit skeptical , mostly because I’ve never farmed out work to someone that I’ve never meet before. I was also a bit skeptical because, quit honestly, they have one of the worst designs and user interface of any website. Myspace might even have a little more going for them in the design department than rentacoder. Never-the-less, I gave them a try. I posted a project for converting a HTML/CSS site to either Joomla or Drupal CMS. After posting my project I received several bids, with varying prices and from varying countries. I ended up choosing a coder in Egypt that had excellent ratings. We corresponded a few times and agreed on price. I explained what I wanted an the Egyptian coder took over. This guy was excellent with English, communicated with me every step of the way and as a matter of fact, he went out of his way to make sure I was happy with the final product. The whole project took about a week and I was extremely happy. One of the cool features that Rentacoder has, that sites like ebay should copy, is a “blind†period for ratings:
If you have a project that you need help with. I highly recommend trying out Rentacoder.com. If only Rentacoder would use their own service to contract some design help and UI help, they would be better off.
Looks look Wal-mart recently snuck in their version of Myspace, something they call The Hub. Actually it looks like another merchandising/marketing tool for selling clothes, for back to school. They offer you a page to customize, and a way to upload videos. The Hub looks like a poor attempt to get some of the Myspace crowd. Take a look and let me know what you think.
I guess there’s some new manufacturing process that takes the fiber of bamboo trees and turns it in to soft, like cashmere, fabric. Apparently, bamboo “absorbs and evaporates sweat in a split secondâ€, keeps you 2 degrees cooler and is is antibacterial, forever. I’m not a big hippie type, but, the planet is falling a part. So, if there are products out there, that doesn’t contribute to screwing up the planet, then, I’m down with em. Check out bambooclothing.co.uk for more info and to purchase a tee.

I did a little research over the weekend to try and figure out what Allthatscool.com’s most popular post have been since launching last year. I’m not surprised by the the #1 and #2 posts but am pretty surprised by the rest. The reason I’m surprised, is that almost all of the traffic for #3-6 came from Google and not from Digg, Del.icio.us, Reddit or Technorati like the top two did. Additionally, I made almost 90% of all of my adsense revenue from the Google traffic. I would say that it pays to be listed in Google, lietraly. The Diggs of the world send a bunch of traffic, but that traffic almost always exits from the same page that they enter on (no pageviews) and rarely ever click on ads. Funny how that works. The audience that costs the most in bandwidth, actually contributes less than our organic web traffic. Is this a pretty common scenario?

The below was sent to me from a Yahoo PR person:
“We’d like to point out the misleading nature of this report as it compares the MySpace.com domain to only the mail.yahoo.com domain. The following is a statement on behalf of Yahoo!: “
The report that Hitwise released today with the headline “MySpace Moves Into #1 Position for all Internet Sites†is misleading. The Yahoo! network is made up of many domains and it is not accurate to compare MySpace.com to just Yahoo!’s mail.yahoo.com domain. When taking into account all of Yahoo!’s domains together as an entire network, Yahoo! clearly remains the number one property in terms of audience share, duration share, page view share and days visited per month.
In the U.S. alone, Yahoo! attracts 129 million unique visitors per month, which represents 74 percent of the online population; in comparison, MySpace reaches only 30 percent of the online population with an audience of 52 million unique visitors. In addition, Yahoo! has the largest share of online time spent than any other property: Yahoo! accounts for 13 percent of users’ online time, while MySpace has only 3.2 percent share in users’ online time.
Yahoo! maintains its leadership position as the world’s most trafficked Internet destination online, with a community of more than 500 million unique monthly visitors from around the globe.
Yesterday, Techcrunch did a post about a new web browser called Heatseek. It’s a secure browser for porn surfing. It’s a genius idea. With Heatseek you can surf porn and still share your computer with your wife. Read more at Techrunch.
There’s also a new “social” porn video site out that’s gaining in popularity. It’s called Pornotube; BE WARNED THAT PORNOTUBE IS HARDCORE PORN, SO VISIT AT YOUR OWN RISK. As you might have guessed, by the name, Pornotube is a clone of the popular Youtube, except that it’s porn. Pornotube has all the bells and whistles that any web 2.0 site has, including, RSS Feeds, gradients, tags and user submitted content. The content ranges from amateur to pirated professional video. If this is your sort of thing, then check it out. NOT SUTABLE FOR WORK.

Back in May, Skype announced that they were letting USA users make FREE phone calls to any landline phone within the US or Canada. It’s a pretty cool deal, I’ve used it a lot. Now, they’ve decided that on certain weekends, USA and Canadian Skype users can call the UK, Mexico or Japan for Free. You can read more about the deal here.
According to Hitwise, Myspace is oficially the most visited domain on the internet. That’s pretty big news, considering Yahoo has been in that position for a very long time. How long can the Myspace madness last? It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Myspace, when the kids decide that it’s not cool anymore. Additionally, if Myspace is that popular, they should be raking in the cash.
I’m a sucker for sites that make it easier to find good deals on drinks and possibly discover a new watering hole. Well, add another one to the list. This is a Google maps mashup called unthirsty that has created a really nice looking site. Since unthirsty is pretty new, they don’t have a lot of listings just yet. So, if you know of happy hours in your town go to Unthirsty.com and contribute.
See other sites that have to do with drinking here.
