Too much World Cup for me to blog

Ok, it’s actually the alcohol that goes with the World Cup, that has prevented from doing some proper posts. I should be back at it tomorrow.

Google is possibly smarter than I thought they were.

With all of the buzz around the blog world about Google’s new Spreadsheets. I was am starting to lose a little respect for them because of the their rapid release of web products that don’t really help anyone (base, notebook, page creator). However, they could be a bit smarter than I thought they were. I read an interesting post over at signal vs noise. What if Google is releasing these products as a distraction from their primary goal?

What if Google was so brilliantly twisted that they’re using Writely and Spreadsheet and Calendar and massive numbers of new hires as flares to distract Microsoft (and others)? Shoot up a flare (Spreadsheet) and scare Microsoft into paying even more attention to new attacks from new directions. The flares serve one purpose: to redirect competitors’ energy away from focusing on search/ads, which are Google’s core competency (and primary revenue source). Hey look over here!!! Is Google the best slight of hand magician around? Is the “Google Office” just a head fake?

Enough already with Google Spreadsheets

Seems like everywhere I looked online, today, someone was talking about Google spreadsheets. Does that many people really care? I thing it’s a great good idea that they (Google) is slowly putting togther an free online suite of office “like” products. But, come on, who’ll really do spreadsheet online. Maybe if you don’t have a computer and your only way to connect to the internet is via school or prison. Then maybe, I can see someone using it. Otherwise, I can’t really see anyone using it for much. If you want something free for doing spreadsheets, then get OpenOffice.

Social Networking in the real world

tribewanted.gifOk, not really the world, more like a time share hippie commune on a Fijian island. I read about a interesting business idea in USAToday, this weekend. Apparently, a couple of guys from England have started a company called Tribewanted.com that is a sort of Myspace, Eco Community Time Share project. It’s quite cool actually, you have three membership levels, priced at $220, $440 and $660 a year, which will entitle you to spend one, two or three weeks annually on a Fijian island, 100 people at a time. The Myspace part of this is that you join the community online to plan you involvement with the Island like, nameing the island or deciding the power source. They have over 600 members already, which apparently has already paid for their 3 year lease on the island. If it wasn’t so expensive to travel there, I think the project sounds fun and I would love to be involved. I’ll for sure be following their progress.
