Build a database driven web application with Dabble DB

dabble_logo.gifDabble DB sent out some “free for 30 day“ invites to their new web application. At first glance it looks like you can easily build database driven web applications from scratch in minutes. I’ll build something using Dabble DB this week and give you a update. It looks like it can be useful application. Stay tuned.

Internet Television brought to you by Veoh 2.0

veoh_logo.gifI just discovered that Veoh has launched a new web front end for their “TV-Quality“ video distribution software. It’s actually Veoh version 2.0. I’ve been using Veoh since late last year, mostly because they have a skateboard.com channel (plug for my alma mater). They have a pretty awesome product/service. I suppose you can think of Veoh 2.0 as a cross between Youtube and Netflix (if netflix let you download movies).

Later this week I plan on doing a more in depth profile of Veoh, so check back soon.

SXSW 2006 interactive overview

As I mentioned yesterday, sxsw interactive is over. It was a very informative event for me. Some of the highlights included Craig Newmark being interviewed by Jimmy Wales of Wikipedia. I also enjoyed the “designing for community with ‘zero-advertising’ brands” discussion that was mediated by Margaret Mason (mightygirl.net) and panelist from skinnycorp (Jacob Dehart, Jeffery Kalmikoff and Jake Nickell). The guys from skinnycorp were funny. They totally reminded me of the higher ups from some of the skateboard brands that I worked with when I was at skateboard.com. They were all about the creation of the products and less about the business of it. Skinnycorp has quadrupled their business every year and are getting ready to move into a new 35k sqf space. No VC funding, profitable and self-financing their other projects like, extratasty.com and 15megsoffame.com. Keep a look out for these guys. Another panel discussion that I enjoyed was “designing the next generation of web apps” with Evan Williams (odeo.com), Mena Trott (sixapart), Jeff Veen (Adapative Path/Yahoo), Eric Rodenbeck (Stamen Design) and George Oates (flickr).

Overall, a very good event. The sxsw staff did a great job and everything went off without a hitch. Now, bring on the music.

Great Entrepreneurial advice from O’reilly’s Marc Hedlund

This is a great read from Marc Hedlund.

I started out this year’s talk with a set of “proverbs” I’ve collected or thought up over the years. I liked the format of a Go book I recently read, called (not surprisingly!) “Proverbs,” and decided to adopt it for the talk. These are basically little nuggets of wisdom for bite-sized nutrition.

Go read Entrepreneurial Proverbs

Fonts that are used in web 2.0 company logos

Check out this list of Web 2.0 company logos and what fonts were used. It’s pretty interesting to see how a designer can take a ordinary font and make a great logo with it.

Free NCAA Tourney Webcast

cbs_ncaa.gifFor any of you who are big mens college basketball fans. CBS Sportsline is offering free webcasts of all of the first three rounds of NCAA Mens play-offs. I think this is awesome. Especially, since some of us out here don’t have cable TV and rely solely on the Internet for news and entertainment. Now, I’ll be able to watch my ACC teams.

Check out CBS Sportsline for the details.

Share your photo albums with BubbleShare.

bubbleshare.gifSo, I signed up for a Bubbleshare account back a couple of months ago. I tried it out at that time, and kinda forget about it. Well, just this last week, I have started playing with it again. I am throughly impressed. Bubbleshare makes it extremely easy to upload and share your pictures. As a matter of fact, it’s so easy, that you don’t even have to sign-up for an account. Go to Bubbleshare and try it for yourself. Below are a few pictures that I uploaded a couple of days ago.
