Search Google News in a Tag cloud

newzingo.gif

I came across Newzingo the other day and thought it was pretty cool. Newzingo.com is a site that gives you a snap shot of Google news in a tag cloud. Now with Newsvine in private Beta I haven’t been going to Google News much. But, with Newzingo you can take quick look at the tag cloud and if a certain tag interests you, you’re there. Go to Newzingo.com and give it a shot.

My Startup Tool Kit

A few months ago I did a short post called “Why you should start a Internet Company Today”. Turns out, that short post has become the most read post here at ATC. Go figure. So, for my benefit, I wanted to expand on that list and kind of make it a little more complete. Who knows, maybe this list will be helpful to others as well. I’m currently in the beginning phase of starting a company and am always on the look out for advice, tips and tools to help me along.

This is not a Top 10 type list, lets just say it’s a directory for a web entrepreneurs to get inspired, get connected and get shit done. I’m sure I’m missing some other great stuff so let me know what else might belong on this list.

Lego for the 21st century

I thought this was pretty cool being that I’m a fan of Lego, or was, when I was a kid. Lego Has A New Robot

“LEGO Group today announces LEGO® MINDSTORMSâ„¢ NXT, a new system that redefines the consumer robotics category the company created in 1998. Smarter, stronger and more intuitive than ever, LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT is a robotics toolset that provides endless opportunities for armchair inventors, robotics fanatics and LEGO builders ages 10 and older to build and program robots that do what they want. LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT, available in August 2006, was shown for the first time to media who attended tonight’s Digital Experienceâ„¢, and will be demonstrated in the Robotics TechZone (Sands Expo #70127-C) Thursday, January 5 through Sunday, January 8 during the 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show.”

I Digg Newsvine

newsvine.gifI got an invite last night for Newsvine’s closed Beta release. My initial review is that I LIKE IT. Newsvine is kind of like a mix of Digg, Slashdot, Google News and maybe a little bit of Squidoo. In addition to being a great news discovery site; Newsvine has a great Social aspect to it. There are three main features to Newsvine:
1. Read- This one is pretty obvious. They get news from the Associated Press and “thousands” of other sources.
2. Write- They give you your own page so that you can write your own column. They even give you ad earnings from that page.
3. Seed- This is your way of adding news that you find interesting to Newsvine. By seeding a story it will allow other users to see what you find interesting and let them comment or chat about it.
Another interesting feature that they have is a sort of MLM plan that will pay you a percentage on advertising revenue that is generated from the columns of the people you refer. If you need a invite me know. As I “dig(g)” around Newsvine more and get my column set-up, I’ll give a update here.

Share a Drink Recipe or find a drink Recipe with Extratasty

From the people who brought us Threadless (skinnycorp); now brings us Extratasty.com. This is a pretty new site, so it’s doesn’t have every drink recipe yet; but it will soon. If you have a great drink and don’t mind sharing the recipe or if you’re looking for something new to mix with that bottle of Grey Goose laying around the house. Then head on over to Extratasty.com. I have always liked the web design that comes out of SkinnyCorp, and Extratasy is no exception.

Music discovery made easy with Pandora

logo_pandora.gifBack in September I did a profile on Pandora (Discover new music you’ll love ); a music discovery player. I decided to do another post about it because if you listen to music then you MUST check out Pandora. My usual day consists of me staring at my computer for hours at a time. While I’m there, I listen to music pretty much all day. I currently have over 250gb of music on my music server, but find myself listening to Pandora more than the music i currently “own”. The reason is simple, Pandora does a fantastic job of discovering new music for me based on other artists or songs that I like. It blows me away how great the recommendation are. It must have taken the people at Pandora and the Music Genome Project a long time to categorize the music. As a matter of fact it took five years:

Over the past 5 years, we’ve carefully listened to the songs of over 10,000 different artists – ranging from popular to obscure – and analyzed the musical qualities of each song one attribute at a time. This work continues each and every day as we endeavor to include all the great new stuff coming out of studios, clubs and garages around the world.

To read more about Pandora, make sure you check out “Algorhythm and Blues” By: Linda Tischler over at Fast Company. Like I stated earlier, if you listen to music you MUST check out Pandora.

Quote of the day

I was looking at Mark Cuban’s blog (Blog Maverick) yesterday and he had a post “Newspapers, Stupidity and Shackleford”. To be honest, I’m not even sure what he was ranting about but, he mentioned the name Charles Shackleford and that reminded me of a famous quote, which I’ll get to in a sec. To make a short story long, Charles Shacklerford was a highly regarded basketball player from North Carolina in the late 80′s and played five or six years in the NBA. Anyway, when he was in college at NC State he made a quote to a reporter that still makes me laugh to this day.

“Left hand, right hand, it doesn’t matter. I’m amphibious.”

To no surprise, Charles Shackelford was busted with a gun, coke and weed recently; oh yeah, and his 19 y/o girlfriend was driving the car when they were busted.

We’re back from a short break

I/we took a short Holiday break. You know how it is with Christmas…kids, in laws in town and all the extra church services. It’s a enough to drive a person mad. The Holidays suck. Well, the do suck, but actually none of the aforementioned apply to me. I was just lazy for the last week or so. But, I’m back now and hope to get on schedule with the daily updates. Stay tuned.
