Last.fm is kind of like Amazon recommendation, where as "people" who liked this song also liked this song. Pandora recommends music based on similar qualities of the artist or the song that you use to build your station. I agree with Darren. Apparently it took 3-4 years to dissect and compile all the elements which comprise each song/band and it was done by professionally-trained musicians. ThisWeekInTech had a good podcast interview with the founder not long ago, but the site seems to be down.
